Kurtz Bros., Inc. (KBI) has successfully marketed yardwaste and biosolids compost for more than a decade. Topsoil has been produced and marketed for three generations. KBI started out as a topsoil company and discovered, over time, that virgin topsoil in close proximity to larger cities in Ohio had become a scarce commodity. Producing organic matter to incorporate into their topsoils developed as a natural extension of the topsoil business.
In 1985 KBI saw the opportunity to operate one of the largest indoor biosolids composting facility in the USA with the City of Akron Compost Facility (ACF). They formed a separate operational company, KB Compost Services Inc. (KBCSI), to manage the operation. The management of such a large facility on a long term basis has afforded KBI an opportunity to develop a two pronged marketing approach to managing the 70,000 cubic yards of biosolids compost produced each year.
