Can you imagine spending a Saturday afternoon touring a composting facility with a definite ammonia odor? For eleven years several hundred students in Conservation Biology class at Malone University have visited KB Compost in Akron, Ohio. These adult students are completing a degree in Malone College Management Program while working at their full-time jobs. Margo Luey, Technical Support Coordinator, makes this tour thoroughly enjoyable with the use of multimedia, games, and humor. She "transforms" students into sludge and guides them through the process of becoming a composted soil amendment.
In this era of living "green", students witness the ingenuity of using human waste, which is usually incinerated or landfilled, to make a beneficial substance. On a personal note, this instructor is reaping a bountiful harvest from the six truckloads of compost which have been worked into her garden over the years.
